Summary/Abstract: The Macedonian government has called for a fresh inquiry into the tragic death of former President Boris Trajkovski, who died in a plane crash over Bosnia in 2004. His passing paved the way for Branko Crvenkovski, then prime minister, to take office in elections held shortly after. However, as Balkanalysis.com reported nine days before the president’s death, he was not planning to run for re-election, as his own nominating party (VMRO-DPMNE) had settled on another candidate. Although the government’s investigating commission – convened during the time that Crvenkovski’s SDSM (now an opposition party) was in power – originally ruled that the plane crash was accidental, investigators today claim new evidence that indicates it could not blamed on “pilot error.”
