Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses suffering and persecution of the Serb Orthodox clergy in Bosanska Krajina during the restless years of the First Serbian Uprising and the Jančić’s Rebellion from 1806 to 1809, anti–reformist Muslim resistance in 1832, the Priest Jovica’s Rebellion in 1834 and the uprising in Krajina in 1858. During these years, a number of churches had been destroyed or set on fire and many priests had been killed. Most of these events took place in Bosanska Krajina, where priests from Bosanska Dubica, Bosanska Kostajnica, Bosanska Gradiška, Prijedor, Banja Luka, Bihać, Bosanski Petrovac and Glamoč took active participation in the uprising activities. For over half of the century, from the First Serbian Uprising in 1804 until the failure of the uprising in Krajina in 1859, Serb Orthodox priests and churches on the wider territory of Bosanska Krajina had been frequently targeted by the zealous Muslim army. After the First Serbian Uprising, many churches had been set on fire, including the two „symbols of the Serbian nationality“ in Bosanska Krajina, monasteries Liplje from the 15th century and Gomionica from the 16th century, and dozens of priests killed. Oppression over the clergy and destruction of churches continued during the Priest Jovica’s Rebellion in 1834 and riots caused by the Muslim rebellion against reforms in the 1840s and 1850s. The violence escalated during the Krajina Uprising in 1858 when many lower ranked priests took places of leaders in the fights against the Turkish rule. After the final rebellion had failed, the enraged Turks set on fire and desecrated two monasteries and 14 churches and arrested, killed or expelled to Austria certain number of priests.
