Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the degree to which methods of confl ict management in the ninth century diff ered signifi cantly from its forms in the tenth and eleventh centuries in the French territories. The fi rst part of the paper sheds light on this historiographical debate, summarizing the main research results on practices attached to comital courts, ordeals, arbiters and feuds from the ninth to eleventh centuries in Francia, as this topic has been only vaguely represented in Hungarian scholarship. That part is followed by an analysis of a unique text, the so-called Conventum, written in the early eleventh century on a series of confl icts in Aquitaine, which shows very well how disputes were handled around the year 1000. As a conclusion, we compare our results related to the eleventh century with those of Janet Nelson, concerning the ninth century, to answer the question: Was there a considerable gap between the methods of confl ict resolution in Francia, in these two respective periods?
