Summary/Abstract: Based on field research, archives and publications in the periodical press, the article aims at revealing the role that the frontier plays in the life of the inhabitants of the village of Strandja, Yambol region. The migration processes in the region during the 19th and early 20th century were followed, as a result of which the ethnic composition of the village population changed: from Turkish, it became mixed, to acquire a purely Bulgarian character during the first decade of the 20th century. Considerable space has been assigned to the impact of the state frontier exerted on the life of the inhabitants of the village of Strandja, whereby emphasis has been laid on the difference it makes in their lifestyle, setting them apart from people living in settlements in the country’s interior.
