Summary/Abstract: Up until 1918, handicrafts represented an important economic activity in Skopje. After World War I, the changing economic structure of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes/Yugoslavia brought serious changes to handicrafts, leading to a strong downward trend in this period. The old crafts suffered the greatest decline. The Chamber of Crafts in Skopje was the only body that regulated craft rules and norms. Shortly before World War II, handicrafts were in a difficult position because of the lack of necessary raw materials and secondary materials, whose prices increased steadily. Very serious downfalls were felt in the productive crafts, while the position of service handicrafts was not quite so critical.
