Summary/Abstract: The problem of definition of the notion “morality” content is considered based on the data of paroemiological dictionaries composed in accordance with a topical principle. The author of the paper comes to the conclusion that the strategies which are chosen by paroemiographers for topical differentiation of proverbs reflect the different understanding of morality. The content of the notion “morality” is reduced when the morality-related proverbs are grouped in a separate topical section. The morality is presented as a notion underlying all areas of human life and activity in dictionaries where proverbs considering virtues and vices are presented in various topical sections, as well as in dictionaries with a single-level topical differentiation of proverbs. The analysis of several European paroemiological dictionaries revealed the equivalence of axiologically marked human traits in the worldviews created by common mindset, which speaks for the unanimity of representatives of various ethnic groups while considering the question of values determined by the dichotomy of good and evil.
