BEDOUIN VERNACULAR AS A SOURCE OF ARABIC LINGUISTIC RULES AND PRACTICE

Summary/Abstract: The Bedouin vernacular was considered the purest source of Arabic linguistic rules and practice, after the Qurʼan, so long as it continued to meet the criteria of reliability set for it and remained free of distortions and impositions resulting from the chain of transmission. The first Arabic linguists held the Bedouin vernacular in very high regard and examples from it were common in the early works of Arabic linguistics. As with other sources, however, they were also quite rigorous regarding usage in the Bedouin vernacular and limited themselves to the language of just a few tribes. Younger generations of Arabic linguists relaxed the criteria, considerably broadening the circle of Arab tribes whose variants were considered permissible. Over time, however, due to the intermixing of the Arab tribes among themselves and with speakers of other languages, the Bedouin vernacular lost its features of authenticity and purity, causing it to lose its standing among the sources of Arabic linguistic teachings.
