Summary/Abstract: Following Angelina Petrova’s numerous publications on the technological pursuits and poetics of Bulgarian composers of New Music, her recent study addresses the information in administrative records (mainly minutes of discussions) of the Union of Bulgarian Composers over the most difficult decades in Bulgarian music history. Here, through the concept of New Music treated as an “informal or protest culture” (p. 17) in the musical and political context of the first 25 years under socialism, the book sets out the mechanisms of ideological pressure shown in the text as follows: 1) In the administrative structuring and restructuring of musical organizations; 2) In the particular methods of censorship (allowing or banning public performances of compositions as well as requirements for criticism and self-criticism during discussions, etc.); 3) In the arguments (ideological, aesthetic, „class“, technological) “for” or “against” New Music. A significant achievement of Angelina Petrova’s monograph is the attempt at a documentary reconstruction of a complicated and multi-layered picture determined by both political pressure and internal aesthetic and interpersonal divides (which were also dynamic) within the community of musicians.
