Summary/Abstract: Populism has become nowadays a synonym for demagoguery. However, it has not always been this way. In the past, various political movements selfidentified as populist claimed populism as a doctrine as legitimate as any other. Their aim was to advance the interests of the people, viewed as being opposed to the schemes of the corrupt elites. The roots of populism go back into the 19th century. The first populists hailed from Russia and the United States. This paper explores their respective ideologies and political fortunes.
