Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the changes in the European Union contract law, which, after the Lisbon Treaty, explicitly provides for the competence of the Union in the field of sports. The text clarifies the main objectives set by the Community, namely the contribution to encouraging the role of sports in the European life and promoting the cooperation of sports organisations. The European Union is competent to adopt measures for supporting the achievement of the said objectives – fairness, openness, encouraging the development of the European sports and protecting the integrity of participants in sporting events. An analysis is presented of the benchmark decisions of the Court of Justice of the European Union in the three main branches of the European sports law – the freedom of movement for workers, the fight against discrimination in the Union and the European competition law.The criteria that must be met in order for a specific sports relationship to fall within the scope of competence of the European Union bodies are outlined as a key point in the practice of the Court of Justice of the EU.
