Summary/Abstract: This article seeks to highlight some of the key factors of influencing a change in the set design in Bulgarian theatre. The imposition of Socialist Re-alism was a process involving imitation, copying and applying the Soviet model as the only one put in place for six or seven years in Bulgarian theatre practice. Breaking through the dogmatic framework began at the National Theatre, but developed as the so-called conditional scenography across the theatres in the country. This change was propelled first and foremost by Stalin’s death and the Plenary Meeting of the Bulgarian Communist Party held in April 1956, along with the Soviet Mossoviet Theatre’s first tour of Bulgaria, by the young generation of set designers and directors and the expansion of the theatre network.
