Summary/Abstract: The Mathnawi is the fruit of the mystical experience of its author, Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi, who himself said of the work that it set out the principles of religion. And ‘irfan is in fact the esoteric aspect of religion: religion without ‘irfan is the mere formalism of exotericism. Maulana’s cognition of God, his ma’rifa, is the basis of his anthropology, which in turn is the basis of his cosmology. The Mathnawi was sung at sama’ in states of shedding the material for higher spiritual worlds. For Maulana, there were two worlds: the temporal and the extra-temporal. The experiences of the ‘arif belong to the extra-temporal world, the inhabitants of which are in transcendental unity and union. We, however, the people of this world, are not merely dispersed and divided, but at odds with one another.
