Summary/Abstract: The exploration of common perspectives on health and illness from today’s point of view has a long and multidisciplinary history, but its place within medical sociology can be understood to reflect some of sociology’s more ubiquitous historically embedded ideological concerns. Health services, medicines and medical devices play an important role in the prevention and treatment of diseases, but their common availability and the potential absence of professional supervision raise concerns regarding potential inappropriate use. Numerous attempts have been made to analyze treatment and medicine prescription from a sociological point of view, through Habermas' theory of communicative action, by considering the interaction of the two spheres of society: the system and the lifeworld. The perspective of the system is a need for increased efficiency of the resource use, crucial for the process of instrumental rationality and further formalization of relationships. The perspective of the living world, on the other hand, is that of reduced space for communicative action and the inability to achieve mutual understanding. Although the trends of "democratization" of health decisions are slowly becoming a reality, the paternalistic attitude remains a daily practice in many health systems.
