Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to analyze the specificity of the instrumental competition in contemporary artistic discourse in the conditions of the formation of the Ukrainian mentality. The methodology involves the use of methods of comparative analysis and synthesis; the basis of the study is the dialectical principle of cognition, systemic, sociocultural approaches. Standard scientific and interdisciplinary research methods are used: analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, comparison, and formalization. The scientific novelty of the research is to determine the criteria of contemporary music competitions in Ukraine and the discourse of instrumental competitions as a reflection of the dynamics of musical formation in Ukraine. Conclusions. Thus, to summarize, it can be argued that today music competitions are an essential means of showing and encouraging talented musicians, an artistic mission in them: to promote the development of musical art in Ukraine, which is manifested in two vectors: in the context of socio-cultural formation and in the context of professional development music and performing arts. An instrumental competition that a priori requires professional training and a certain academic level, lacking only natural talent and data (as may be the case with some vocal competitions) is a phenomenon that has arisen from contemporary socio-cultural space and involves a new organizational and methodological policy that meets the goals of sociocultural design, namely: promoting and replicating the best artistic ideas and technologies; developing socio-cultural communications and promoting access to the cultural values of all socio-cultural groups of the population; deepening knowledge from different fields in order to solve problematic socio-cultural situations in which a person is present; creation of conditions for quality organization of the concert life of the country. Besides, the importance of art education institutions capable of providing the necessary training is increasing. But the principal value of instrumental competitions today is to identify the creative capabilities of artists, to create a new dimension of professional, academic musical culture accessible to the average recipient.
