Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with literary and dialect names for several cultural realia – heathen and heretic, human mediators between the sacred and the profane, disease and healing. The author has studied linguistic data found in various medieval manuscripts, a Bulgarian-Italian dictionary from 1845 and the Bulgarian dialects. The names are analysed in relation to relevant Christian ideas and Bulgarian traditional culture, each of which motivates different types of nomination.
