Summary/Abstract: In December 2018, the revision of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive, as a key instrument in the media policies of the European Union has been concluded, and the new provisions bring significant new elements as well as modifications to the existing text. The new text has to be adapted by member states in national law no later than September 2020. The issue of limitations to freedom of transmission or retransmission of audiovisual media services is provided in the new text with a broader spectrum of modalities, taken into consideration also user generated content and video-sharing platform. Commercial communications (advertising, sponsorship), as well as restrictions imposed on content containing incitement to violence or hatred in order to protect all citizens from content whose dissemination constitutes an activity which is a criminal offense under Union law.
