Summary/Abstract: Caring for an elderly relative with dementia is considered in the article as a difficult life situation, as destructive for the assistant as for the whole family. As a result, people who unprepared for taking care, need social support themselves. The article presents the results of an empirical study of the educational needs of people caring for elderly relatives with dementia. The sample consisted of 34 respondents included in the care process. Quantitative (questionnaire) and qualitative (conversation) methods of collecting information were used in the study. According to the results of the study, the majority of respondents lack knowledge about caring for a sick relative. 92% of respondents would like to have such information. The identified needs justify the content of the educational program for relatives caring for elderly patients with dementia. The program should include three blocks: medical, legal and psychological. Informing should be combined with active teaching methods for more effective learning. The implementation of the program is possible both on the basis of a psychiatric clinic, and in complex centers of social services for the population, which will require interagency interaction. This program is considered as a type of social support for assistants.
