Summary/Abstract: The family based on legitimate marriage has been the norm in all European societies, under the Old Regime. Legitimate marriage ensured the intergenerational transfer of name and property, while cohabitation was seen as posing a serious threat to the social order derived from the law. However, what was really at stake was the status of children resulted from illegitimate or transient relationships; perceived as bastards by society, they were excluded from their father family line, and consequently did not inherit any of his possessions.
