Summary/Abstract: The article determines the place of Z. Knyazhevsky in the history of Bulgarian ethnography and analyses his study Bolgarskiye Poveriya (Bulgarian Superstitions), published in 1846. It was the first publication by a Bulgarian about the Bulgarian superstitions. Nine of these are studied, familiar to all Bulgarians. The study is descriptive, but skillfully done by a contemporary who was well acquainted with folk culture. Since the middle of the last century it has been one of the sources for a study of the spiritual culture of the Bulgarians. Knyazhevsky's study has not lost its qualities as a first class source up to this day. It is also an important fact in the history of Bulgarian ethnography and evidences its relations with the Russian science of ethnography.
