Summary/Abstract: During the 19th century, the church had been one of the main institutions of the Romanians of Transylvania and priests played an active role in the life of their communities as their involvement was not limited to the pulpit but they were also social, cultural and even political actors. The present paper is intended as a case study analysing the role the Greek-Catholic church played in the development of the Romanian community of Reghin. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Romanians living here were a small group, scattered into the Saxon town, with no real sense of community. The arrival of Petru Maior as archpriest of the area and the establishment of a Greek-Catholic parish and church conveyed a feeling of cohesion, a necessary impulse for the community which succeeded by the end of the century to transform the town of the Saxons in a centre for the Romanians living in the area, the model of priesthood offered by Petru Maior guiding the activity of his successors and contributing to the shaping and development of the Romanian community of Reghin.
