Summary/Abstract: Thomas Aquinas’ doctrine of transcendentals is here presented with regard to its inherent epistemic character. The doctrine will be analyzed with respect to the general problem of the possibility of the transcendental concepts’ development. The analysis results with the primacy of the secondary three transcendentals (aliquid, verum, bonum) as the key for the interpretation of the doctrine in general, as well as with the conclusion that the doctrine has a metaphysical, not theological character. Finally, the meaning of the doctrine of transcendentals is presented in the view of the development of the new Thomistic interpretation of metaphysics.
