Summary/Abstract: Parody in Bulgarian epic heroic folksongs has not yet been studied systematically. This article presents an attempt at revealing the synchronic relationships between the texts of serious epic songs and the epic parodies in Bulgarian folklore. The analysis of the published material available points to the occurrence of a “literary” parody type, wherein the epic parodies are founded upon already existing texts, or upon lowering the devices applied. The samples from Serbo-Croatian epic tradition, which are here introduced for comparison, provide a possibility for reconstructing also a “feuilleton” parody type (i.e. the introduction into the epic plots of topical material from rural life). These are the two main branches of epic parody. Its position within the system of epos is determined by the need for existence of the binary oppositions of serious vs. comic, lofty vs. lowly, and positive vs. negative.
