Summary/Abstract: In the monastery from 9th-10th c. by Ravna in the vicinity of the town of Provadia a monastery school was located. It was positioned next to the church in the inner courtyard where the cells of the monks and the scriptorium were situated. Traces of instruction in the school are left in the stone blocks of the different monastery buildings. These are graffiti-alphabeta and graffiti with inscriptions with theological content. The alphabeta and the inscriptions are in the Greek language in minuscule writing. There are also additional inscriptions and letters in minuscule. The Greek language inscriptions contain fragments of the Psalter. The data demonstrate that the instruction in the school was of the level of primary school. One of the goals set by the school was to teach the students to read liturgical texts and to memorize them. The deviations, which we were able to analyze in the graffiti-alphabeta and the inscriptions lead us to the conclusion that the students and perhaps the teachers did not belong to the ethnic Greek-speaking community. The data also reveal a different level of knowledge of Greek language and different options to write in it by the students. The ultimate goal of this education was to prepare calligraphists, translators from Greek language into Old Bulgarian language.
