Summary/Abstract: This article is an overview of what followed after the Union of 1918, starting from the enthusiasm of the Romanians in Transylvania, Bucovina or Bassarabia, on the occasion of the visit of the sovereigns of the Kingdom of Romania in 1919–1920 in these territories, continuing with the changes in the territories and demography and ending with cultural evolution. I underline that, by reviewing the transformations of demographic structure we have insisted on the position of especially ethnic Hungarians on the Union as a fact and their attitude towards the Romanian unitary national state. For some of them familiar with the minority status they had in the Austro‑Hungarian monarchy until 1918, the acceptance of the new historical‑political reality was made quite easily while the Hungarian community benefiting from the dominant class status had a attitude of denial. The intelligent policy promoted by Romanian politicians after the Great Union by adopting legislation that excluded the granting of rights and freedoms on ethnic grounds allowed the integration of minorities into the new political, social and territorial framework. The Great Union also brought transformations into the cultural life, which is becoming more and more vibrant, more dynamic in all its compartments, a cultural life built on the basis of the achievements of the previous period. Important personalities from history, archaeology, history of art, ethnography, folklore, classical music, or sociology are reviewed. Unfortunately, the Great Romania, as the people of 1918 have built, today no longer exists. Instead, there was the beautiful story of the Great Union, which we today, young or not young, have the obligation to look for in the pages of the history books.
