Summary/Abstract: Since 2009 when Bitcoin was released, with it, a new type of currency has been created. One that is unaf-fected by inflation with a limited supply, non-central administration on its blockchain techology. Since then, newer and better versions of cryptocurrency have been created, offering new possibillities such as smart con-tracts that will happen for all parties involved or for none, lightning fast, irreversible transactions between two or more parties anywhere on the globe, Internet of Things-ready blockchains. Due to its nature, some transactions can be untraceable, opening new payment options for black markets. This paper is analyzing how cryptocurrencies were created and evolved, how it compares to conventional monetary systems, and the im-pact on economy and business opportunities.
