CRISIS AND CONCEPTUAL EU SEARCHES – THE ROAD TO THE END, OR A NEW BEGINNING OPPORTUNITY?

Summary/Abstract: In the light of many international and domestic challenges, the EU faces a problem with its communal sustainability. The growth of the integration project is diagnosed as “prone to crises” and is carefully observed in order to prove that the EU was able to overcome similar obstacles. In the search for the right formula for further development, the EU faces a paradox – the expanding and deepening, yet difficult to manage, integration, on the one hand, and the need for a new conceptual basis, on the other. Questions about the identity of the EU arise. The meaning of the phrase “concept of the EU” is being questioned through the lenses of the non-functionalist school, intergovernmental cooperation and federalist ideas. Three alternative paths for the future development of the EU are suggested – from the almost apocalyptic idea of "closing” the project, through jealous protection of the status quo, to transformation as the next stage of development.
