Summary/Abstract: Dilapidated historical towns, churches in ruins, large-scale demolition of whole town quarters to be replaced with concrete blocks of flats and, in the case of North Bohemia, even the liquidation of extensive areas of the cultural landscape – all of this shapes in our memory a typical picture of the care the communists took of towns and monuments. The picture is so obvious that so far we have hardly been able to ask how this cultural catastrophe could have actually happened.
