Summary/Abstract: Accreditation is the oldest and the most common form of an external evaluation conducted to assess the healthcare quality. It consists of a voluntary control run by external auditors, i.e. visitators, which, once the specified criteria are fulfilled, is followed by an accreditation certificate granted by the Healthcare Quality Monitoring Centre (CMJ by its Polish abbreviation). An important aspect of the certification process is the fact that the healthcare unit is assessed as a whole. The aim of the article is to discuss the issues concerning the accreditation process, which since 2009 has its legal basis in the Healthcare Accreditation Act. Moreover, the article discusses the accreditation standards in terms of proving healthcare services, introduced cyclically since 2010 and covering various fields. The article contains a description of ‘Supporting accreditation process of healthcare units” Project, the main aim of which was to increase the number of accredited hospitals. The study is based on the latest subject literature, the current legal acts and accreditation standards. The analysis method applied in the article is a desk research.
