Summary/Abstract: Introduction: In Poland, the most popular quality certification programmes are ISO certification and accreditation. To obtain a quality certificate, a hospital is obliged to perform activities intended for control, prevention and speedy elimination of nosocomial infection. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between possessing a quality certificate and the presence of nosocomial infections in hospitals in the region of Lodz. Material and methods: Records of nosocomial infections occurring in hospitals in the Lodz region in 2013 and 2014 were investigated. Results: In 2013, 11 hospital-acquired infections were detected from 23 hospitals with an ISO certificate, while in 2014, 10 infections were detected from 16 hospitals with an ISO certificate. A statistically significant relationship was found between hospitals possessing an ISO certificate and detection of nosocomial infections, and between hospitals with an ISO certificate and the number of people infected in the hospital. Conclusion: The infection control system in hospitals with an ISO certificate demonstrates greater nosocomial infection reportability.
