Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is connected with the actualization in the modern concert-competitive practice of the virtuoso beginning, which is most adequately embodied in the genre of the etude. The choice of this aim can be explained by the increase of scientific attention to the phenomenon of virtuosity and its evaluation. The problematic aspect of the article lies in identifying specific features of the poetics of the artistic etude from the viewpoint of the dichotomy between virtuosity and conceptualism. The methodology of work is based on the historical and genre-typological approaches to the selected scientific problem. The first of these approaches is used to highlight the functioning of pianistic art in the socio-cultural space of piano art development and birth of etude. The other – because of the requirement to define the genre structure of the artistic etude. The scientific novelty of the work is determined by the study of artistic etude poetics as the interaction of virtuosity and conceptualism. The latest musicology materials on virtuosity in performing art have made it possible to provide scientific understanding about the circumstances of the development of this genre and to reveal its role in the formation of piano art at different stages of its existence. Conclusions. It has been found that the artistic etude grows at the crossroads of virtuosity and conceptualism; this unity provides its long life during the last centuries. This genre, arising on the border of different cultural and historical eras, pianistic styles, musical language systems, accumulates the latest achievements of composers and performing-pianistic creativity.
