A Sociological Endeavor for a Literary History

Summary/Abstract: Arshi Pipa’s research work “Letërsia shqipe: Perspektiva shoqërore”, which is the third part of his discursive project on culture and the art of Albanian literary creation titled “Trilogia Albanika” can be evaluated as an attempt to offer a model of a history of Albanian literature as seen from a very unique point of view. Being a book of a panoramic width of Albanian literature, it reveals the intention for creating a map for our literary culture.Arshi Pipa’s endeavor for a periodization of Albanian literature is quite interesting and worthy of being discussed. Through this method of periodization, he proposes a model of the history of literature that is necessary and debatable for our literary and cultural debate to this day. He structures Albanian literature into four major periods: The Cultural Mosaic of the Pre-nationalistic Period (1555-1881), The Romantic Literature of National Renaissance (1836) 1881-1912 (1924), The Literature of the Independence-Conquest Period 1912 (1924)- 1939 (1944), and Contemporary Literature 1944-1974. It is important to mention that he does not consider the first period as literary but as a cultural mosaic. The period of Romantic Literature and the period of Independence-Conquest are amalgamated temporally, due to the fact that even after the self-sufficiency of the nation there are certain nuances of Romanticism as well as authors that challenge this literary discourse.
