(Notes on book editions of foreign comics and pictorial treatments of the holocaust theme)

Summary/Abstract: The study addresses varying approaches of authors and illustrators to the theme of the Holocaust. It analyses six foreign books which have been translated into Czech and published over the decades since 1989. Despite their differences in genre, one can find common denominators, these being the aspect of memory and the figural depiction of the characters. They lived through the Holocaust and often feel the need to communicate their life experience to their contemporaries and want to introduce the youngest generation to some complicated aspects of life. Apart from Maus, the original American graphic novel which is targeted more at adolescent or even adult readers, the author mentions the biographies and stories of Dutch origin, the Child with a Star comics narrative and the Erika’s Story picture book.
