Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to analyze the attitude of early Christian thinkers to the art of the word, to poetry and eloquence, to clarify the role and significance of such speech genres as “praise,” “crying,” “confession.” The methodology is based on the application of general scientific and special methods of cognition, in particular: analysis, synthesis, the logical method and the method of generalizations. The scientific novelty lies in the introduction of the statement that, along with the condemnation of eloquence as idle talk, Christian thinkers gave this art a new meaning and experience through the use of quotations from Holy Scripture in sermons. Conclusions. Early Christian thinkers paid great attention to the art of the word to form a new Christian theory of the word, understood in the broadest sense. The Fathers of the Church managed to rethink a lot from the ancient aesthetic heritage to realize the place, functions, and significance of linguistic arts in the Christian cult and culture in general. In the future, theologians, philosophers, and philologists assessed their experience and relied on their texts as models in theoretical and practical terms.
