Summary/Abstract: This paper offers an analysis of the role of purism in the languages of two Slavic countries in the period of forming their national literary languages – Bulgarian and Russian. The focus is on the type of puristic substitutions in the purist activity of this period which characterizes purism as archaizing, ethnographic and elitist. Thus, Bulgarian purism can be described as archaizing, while Russian – as ethnographic.
