Summary/Abstract: The gradation of shifts in geographical space and the degree of moral perfection are inseparable in medieval Russian texts. Moral categories have local characteristics and vice versa. Geography is presented as a form of ethics, a traveller - as a pilgrim. The process of moral perfection is always a kind of "setting off", a shift in geographical space. These views form the basis for treating such notions as 'hell' and 'paradise' as spatial realities, which are geographical objects as well as any other land.
