Summary/Abstract: Within the span of sixty years in the middle ages two biographies of Stefan Dečanski were written and each of them described him quite differently. According to Danilo’s Student, he was twice to blame and according to Gregory Tsamblak he was thrice the martyr. Relying on the description of the battle of Velbazhd, the aim of the paper is to demonstrate how Serbian medieval biographies developed in two directions: as an official, ruler’s biography and as a Christian didactic hagiography. In the context of ambivalence of the same motives, special attention was paid to the topos of prayer before the battle and the comparison of Dečanski and Moses, which best illustrate different aims of the authors.
