Application of network analysis in public transport

Summary/Abstract: For many years GIS technology is used successfully in the land use management. Year by year we can observe more examples of GIS implementation in the municipalities and local governments in Poland. It is also expressed by numerous scientific conferences, trainings (INSPIERE Academy) and finally inviting bids for the GIS developments. The paper presents an example of using a spatial database for the municipalities Koby³ka and Wolomin to optimize the communication network of public transport. Nowadays it is urgent to solve communications problems in small towns which are close to big cities. The structure of employment is focused to big cities which naturally attract people from neighboring towns. In order to reduce migration and traffic jams it is very important to organize new communication links. Investing in the communications is extremely cost effective for local governments. That’s why we take a look at network analysis applications in order to properly construct a communication network using GIS technology.
