Summary/Abstract: Instead of (an) “image” God gave Himself. Creating the man in His image and after His likeness (Gen 1, 26-27), the Creator left His fingerprints on His creature as a print and as a sign of identity and belonging. Contemplating ourselves, we may see the looking-glass of God’s eyes. What this mirror is showing, that’s all what we may see. The trap of the image is an absurd concept and still it is the ancient and simplest instrument of apprehension and expression. As a faculty it allows countless possibilities but it bounds too. The “idea” and the “idol” are the products of the imagination. Very often the “idol” degenerates into caricature (see the prophetic criticism and Psalm 115 where the idols are held up to ridicule). According to the biblical criticism the idols are the monstrosities of the compulsion of imagery, producing the opposite of the intended effect.
