Summary/Abstract: While writing on the history of Serbia in the 19th century, Slobodan Jovanović focused on the process of political modernization. Dealing with this problem, he could not bypass the discussion about the social position and role of the Serbian peasantry, which constituted about 90% of population. In this paper we give a short presentation of his analysis of the social position and political role of the Serbian peasantry. We do not have to agree with all his claims, but we must admit that Jovanović left us numerous significant sociological insights about this social stratum/class – insights that deserve the attention of sociologists.
