Summary/Abstract: The lexeme “water” indicates one of the major natural elements. The significance of the named entity in the life of man is also reflected in the Serbian lexicon. The analysis shows that the secondary meanings of this lexeme are mainly based on metonymy and that symbolic realizations are induced by metaphorical associations. The Serbian language picture of the world, based on the concept of water and its nominal derivatives, is very complex. It consists of nouns with а man as their denotatum (nomina agentis, attributiva, professionis), nomina loci, nomina instrumeni, terms (names of animals and plants, chemical and anatomical terms, religious terms) and the name of the branch. It contains elements of folk beliefs and traditions, especially in derivatives (воденица), as well as elements from the religious domain (водица, Водокрст, водоосвећење). The picture of the world also contains the nouns with elements of the relief as their denotatum (развође, водомеђа, троразвође), and the names of animals according to their natural environment (водењача, водњика, водоземац). They are also indicators of activity of people from our area that no longer exists today (водар).
