Summary/Abstract: This article aims to provide a brief historical overview of the development of institutional actors in the domain of EU´s CFSP and ESDP from the early 1990s until the Lisbon Treaty took effect.The first section deals with a chronological overview of EU primary law development from the Treaty on European Union signed in Maastrocht through its subsequent revision at Amsterdam. The second section concerns the process of institutional creation of security and defence policy-related bodies after the Treaty of Nice had become effective e.g. Political and Security Committee, EU Military Committee, and EU Military Staff. The final third section outlines problems and challenges facing Common Security and Defence Policy after the Lisbon Treaty currently in force.
