Summary/Abstract: IIIviri monetales supervised the process of minting coins during the reign ofAugustus. They signed coins with their names; other content they used to place on coinswas not always connected only with the Princeps. The article analyses some chosen issues dated back to 22–12 B.C., viewing them from an angle of the so-called ancestralthemes – closest for the mint-magistrates. This very consideration was guided by the question whether these Augustan officials enjoyed any kind of freedom as regards decidingon the specific design of the coins (legends, iconography). Could young representativesof aristocratic families in Rome still accentuate their gens descent during the times whenthe principate was being formed or rather were they obligated to follow the rule that eachimage should evoke associations with the new state and its leader? The analysis showed that on the one hand IIIviri continued the republican traditionsof referring to private (gens) themes on coins (they reminded about the political successesof their predecessors, of regions, ethnic groups, which they came from, they patternedthemselves upon the types of gens coins, built their genealogies on coins). On the otherhand – through placing on the reverses or obverses signed images of Augustus or visualreflections of diverse aspects of his politics or ideology – they respected the guidelines ofofficial ideology. Thus, there are conditions to claim that in the beginnings of the principate, these young magistrates would freely use old forms and tools of communicationto present themselves as the representatives of old gentes; however, at the same time theyalways took into account and promoted the person and position of the Princeps. The discussed issues are signs of a peculiar compromise of the new and the old and show a sort ofconcord within the frame of ideas which occurred in many areas of the reality of the time.: IIIviri monetales, którzy nadzorowali proces bicia monet za rządów Augustai sygnowali je swoimi imionami, nie zawsze umieszczali na nich treści związane tylko z princepsem.
