Summary/Abstract: The overthrow of Todor Zhivkov’s regime on 10 November 1989 ended the thirty-year stagnation in the Bulgarian-American political relations. The accession of Bulgaria to the Eastern European group that has taken steps to transform its socio-political systems, gave Washington the historic opportunity to influence the Balkan country on the road to democracy and market economy. The early receptiveness of the Bulgarian authorities to improving the relations with the United States, marked by the abolition of the discriminatory policies towards the Turkish population, by the abolishment the Bulgarian Communist Party’s “leading role” in the state government, by the legalization of the opposition democratic parties and by the conduct of the first multiparty elections, created the conditions for genuine cooperation between the USA and Bulgaria in a number of areas.
