Summary/Abstract: The article highlights the significance of “South Stream” project for European countries as well as countries of the Balkan region. This project aims to strengthen energy security of the Europe in context of the strategy covering diversification of gas supply routes. Recently, the project has been constantly jeopardized, and emerging problems concerning it are more political than economic ones. Nevertheless, real alternatives to “South Stream” are unlikely to appear in the near future, and Russian project designed to transform the Balkans into the European energy center will be implemented.
