Summary/Abstract: Without neglecting historical facts (literal meaning), the book of Numbers must be interpreted spiritually in a Christological key. Aaron’s priesthood is an image of the High Priest who is Jesus Christ. Aaron’s sprouted rod is a sign for those who think that priesthood can be achieved through their own power and not by God's wish. Through God’s power, something unusual is happening: a branch which is broken from its roots will live and it will bring fruit overnight. As a result, Aaron’s rod not only sprouted, but it also budded, blossomed and produced fruit. Those four external signs of the dead rod, in a typical way, are images and signs of the Cross of Christ, of the Resurrection of Christ and of the birth of Jesus from virgin Mary. Through the eyes of the Holy Fathers, the fruits of rod, almonds or nuts, symbolize the knowledge of Scripture, divine generosity, resurrection of humans, growing degrees of spiritual life and physical ages of Christians' bodies and the progress of their souls.
