Summary/Abstract: Traditionally, Romania and Turkey enjoyed good diplomatic relations during the 20th century, with the exception of the First World War and the Cold War participation in hostile alliances. Nowadays, in spite of the spectacular development of the economic relations and the good political cooperation to regional security initiatives, there is a lack of common regional projects and even a kind of strategic rivalry in the Wider Black Sea Area, as Turkey, supported by Russia, wants to keep this area „closed” to Western penetration, while Romania supports its opening and internationalization. But anyway, there is a good prospect for enhanced cooperation, because Romanians cannot forget that Turkey was one of the most vocal countries supporting NATO membership for Bucharest and, on the other side, Romania constantly supported Turkey for EU membership. Only pragmatism, the common will to make concessions and the common EU membership would ensure a real partnership for these two states.
