Summary/Abstract: The Mediterranean, the barometer of the World's political climate, has vast strategic importance. The seventeen Mediterranean countries have diverse economic, political, socio-cultural and religions features. Depending on their specific positions, Mediterranean countries adopt different security strategies. Some of them belong to NATO, others rely on their own armed forces. The powerful naval fleets of the super-powers control the sea. The desire for independence or for the consolidation of their sovereignty have led several countries in the area to call for demilitarizaton, neutralization and the transformation of the Mediterranean Sea into a »zone of peace and cooperation«. This is the long-range security strategy of the Mediterranean nonaligned countries.
