University and the Arts. Opening Speech for the Beginning of the Academic Year 2018/2019 at the New Bulgarian University

Summary/Abstract: Violeta Decheva, professor in Theater Studies, offers a passionate meditation on the meaning of university education in arts today. Exactly through teaching arts NBU has chosen the best possible way to develop in the students, and hence in the society, an ability to assert one’s own personality while respecting the other and otherness. This is much more than learning the rules of making theater or cinema. The arts are capable of presenting us and the world in the less expected way working both with the memory and the imagination – from Shakespeare’s Hamlet to Christo’s Mastaba.
