“The “Audience” of Athletic Performances, or How Affects Circulate in Stadiums”

Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes social reactions to two sporting events during thetime of the Polish People’s Republic: protests during the last stage of the Peace Race in 1968 and fans hissing at player Kazimierz Deyna during the match against Portugal in 1978. Using the category of contact zones defined by Mary Louise Pratt and the affective theory of Sarah Ahmed,the author tries to outline the social context of these manifestations and show that they were the result of wider cultural and political change staking place during that period.
