POLISH REVIEWS OF THE NOVEL ”MAITREYI”

Summary/Abstract: In this paper we propose the reviews of novel «Maitreyi » by Mircea Eliade, presented from the perspective of Polish exegesis. A reception study as a literary phenomenon is a dynamic process that requires not only knowledge of the investigated author, but especially the cultural and mental context of the space in which his/her work is created. The best way to approach reception is, firstly, through the corpus of translations that enable readers to come into direct contact with text and, secondly, through studies or critical exegeses, which often resorts to methodological tradition in their own country, expanding or developing a new interpretation of texts. Among the main Eliade’s literary works that have been published in Poland we can mention, among others, the novel «Maitreyi». A very important role in promoting Eliade in Poland has been played by the translators of his works, including Irena Harasimowicz, who translated the novel «Maitreyi» with the preface of the author and literary critic afterword written by Lech Budrecki. Another eminent translator of Eliade’s literary work is Ireneusz Kania who also contributed to promoting Eliade’s work in Poland with his perspective on the novel «Maitreyi».
